The Complete Guide to Diving in Mallorca | 70 Best Dive Sites

Wednesday, April 20, 2016 Diving and snorkeling by admin

Mallorca is blessed with an amazing climate, crystal clear water and white-sand beaches.

But that’s not all.

The island is considered to be one of the best diving spots in Europe.

So this post is about diving and dive sites on Mallorca.

To be precise – Its a list of ALL dive sites available on Mallorca.

Frankly, I am very proud, as I couldn’t find any other source that would list all of the locations.

I am excited so I hope you are too!

First things first:

Mallorca has 70 dive sites to offer to all “tastes” and levels.

70 Best Dive Sites on Mallorca

Diving is a serious activity that requires you to be qualified in order to book a dive with a dive centre.

The diving certification you will need will depend on the type of dive you would like to do and the amount of experience you already have.

If you don’t have a diving certificate yet, I suggest you do an intro dive to get a feel for it.

Introduction dive does not require you to have a qualification nor it will give you any papers to continue studying.

Who knows? Maybe you’ll decide to get your Open Water certificate on Mallorca.

The first level only takes 3 days and the island definitely has enough to offer for it to be exciting.

Most of the dive sites on Mallorca are Open Water Diver level. Nonetheless, some of the dive sites will require you to have a more advanced certificate.

There are also a few dive sites that are very deep between 40-60 meters and they go way beyond recreational diving limits.

You might be interested if you are a technical diver though.

The prices on the island are very reasonable quoted at about €40 per fun dive, €80 for Discover Scuba Diving and around €400 for an Open Water Course.

Obviously, the more dives you book the bigger discount you get.

Sometimes, the diving equipment and insurance will not be included in the quoted price, so make sure you ask before you make a booking.

On Mallorca you can also easily do different specialty dives including Wreck Diving, Cavern Diving, Peak Performance Buoyancy and Deep Diving courses.

Should you decide to take a dive course, especially a more advanced level your first concern should be finding an authorised dive centre.

Before you make the decision who to dive with its always important that the dive centre if fully authorised to provide education and fun dives you are looking to sign up for.

Most developed countries regulate and control dive centres and dive centre instructors and employees. For example in the UK the dive centre employees will be regulated by “The Diving at Work Regulations, 1997”.

All dive centres are monitored to insure that recreational diving activities offered to end clients are controlled, managed and conducted adequately and are safe for all participants.

If you decide to dive with a unlicensed dive centre you will be putting your life at risk and might as well end up in a Decompression Chamber or worse…

Same goes for diving with a friend who is not properly trained to be an instructor or a dive master.

The best thing you can do to insure your dive is enjoyable is to do your homework. Ask for a dive centres certification and check with the respective authority if the dive centre is listed on their official website.

That is it for my 5 lines of warning, so let’s start by looking at the map of Mallorca with the main dive areas and dive sites highlighted.

Mallorca divesites map

It is clear from the first glance that most of the dive sites are located on the Southeast, West and the North of the Island.

You might be wondering: which part is the best?

All of the parts of the island offer crystal clear water and visibility as well as a lot to see, but they are indeed different.

The West of the island has plenty of great locations for intermediate and beginner divers.

The North of the island is full of challenging dives for experienced divers.

The South has a little bit of both and a hand full of spectacular wrecks. The biggest one is 40 meters long and can be penetrated.

Each of the dive site listed in this guide has a short description, maximum depth limited, location, approach type, seabed and the certificate level needed to perform the dive.

Some of the dive sites are located very close to each other and sometimes can be done in a single dive.

Please consult with the dive centre to see which dive sites you can merge into one dive, instead of doing a few.

So let’s start with the South.

61. BMW Cave & 8 Meter Ledge – a cave dive, an entrance of which remotely resembles a BMW sign (whoever named this dive site must have been a BMW fan). The cave is dark, but very wide, thus you will need a torch to explore the marine life hiding in the dark waters.

63. The A Cave & Hammer Cave – ultimately this dive site features two caverns. A very deep one – Cave “A” only suitable for very experienced divers, as the entrance is located at 30 meters deep. The cavern is called an “A” cave as the entrance resembles a letter “A”. “Cave A” is a challenging dive we wouldn’t recommend to divers with little experience. Much shallower, at 8 meters you can find an entrance to the “Hammer cave”, the second cave on the dive. The second cave is suitable for all level divers and has a lot of marine life and sea weed inside.

  • Maximum depth: 30 meters
  • Location: Alcudia & Puerto Pollensa
  • Type of dive: boat
  • Seabed: rock
  • Requirements: Advanced Open Water, Cavern Diver recommended

64. The S Cave – a challenging, but amazing dive for experienced divers. The cave is very narrow and 20 meters deep. Thus, you will need to be extremely careful and control your buoyancy very well not to steer the bottom up.

  • Maximum depth: 23 meters
  • Location: Puerto Pollensa
  • Type of dive: boat
  • Seabed: rock
  • Requirements: Advanced Open Water, Cavern Diver

65. Formentor Steps – a dive in a cavern with an interesting approach. You will first descend to 12 meters where you will find and entrance to the cave that will take you 20 meters deep. At the very end of the cave you will find a massive round rock that some divers call a “dragon egg”.

  • Maximum depth: 30 meters
  • Location: Puerto Pollensa
  • Type of dive: boat
  • Seabed: rock
  • Requirements: Advanced Open Water, Cavern Diver

66. Cap de Formentor – this dive site is only reachable when the sea is calm. The dive site is basically a very deep canyon with plenty of marine life including tune, groupers, lobster, coral and larger deep water fish. The dive site requires special training and is not suitable for traditional recreational divers.

  • Location: Puerto Pollensa
  • Type of dive: boat
  • Seabed: rock

67. El Puente de Maria (Bridges) – this dive site is very much valued for its marine life. You will most likely spot tuna, moray eels and barracudas. • Maximum depth: 22 meters
  • Location: Puerto Pollensa
  • Type of dive: boat

The north of the island is not only rich with amazing dive sites, but also is very fortunate to have one of the oldest dive centres on the island – Scuba Mallorca. The dive centre organises dives every day, so no matter if you are on the island for a day or few week you’ll be able to go for a dive with Scuba Mallorca.

This is it for my guide to dive sites on Mallorca.

If I forgot a spot, please feel free to drop me a line with a description of a dive site you would like me to add.

Keep learning and as my diver friends from Gili Air in Indonesia say:

Diving is like Sex
