Walking Murcia‘Buenos Dias James and Zach! How are you?’ Alejandro’s eyes are shining as his face cracks into a broad smile, as is usual for when he uses English my housemate and I have slowly been teaching him in class. He jumps out of the driver’s seat and slides open the back door to his mini-van, revealing the rest of our hiking companions, more students of ours. Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is a remote wilderness lying in the north-west tip of Iceland. A gem of emerald green slopes and white glacier peninsulas, isolated and unspoilt, the edge of Europe. The Reserve is surrounded by water, caught between the Bay of Glaciers and the Greenland Sea. It is located in the remote district called the Westfjords, a dizzying cluster of fjords, capes, and glaciers slipping into saltwater. There is nothing for miles but green valleys, pebbled shores, and moist slopes of dandelions and herbs.

“O’win, oko, o’win, oko, o’win, oko” the cadence of the oars digging into the emerald green waters brings a whisper of change across the sea. The beat grows ever faster and faster as their target nears. “O’win, oko, o’win, oko”. There will be a feast this night. “O’win, oko, o’win, oko”. This raid will mark either the end for the Caribs or their foreign invaders who have come to claim these islands. Cries go out to their gods, to the pa’u – the island, the palana – the sea, and to a’talɨ, the cave. Fire shoots out of the side of the giant wooden beast – a galleon, and the chants fade away to jovial music.
